Uttar Pradesh finance minister Suresh Khanna on Wednesday presented ₹6.9 lakh crore budget for the financial year 2023-24, with a focus on the welfare of youth, women, and farmers.

Chief minister Yogi Adityanath has called this year’s budget as the first budget of “Amrit Kaal”.

This budget assumes significance keeping in view the general election slated to take place next year. Being the most populous state in India, the Yogi government has tried to woo dominant sections of society with this budget: women, farmers and youth.

The government has announced several new measures to uplift the lives of women and farmers and generate more employment opportunities for the massive young population in Uttar Pradesh.

In a major infrastructure development push, finance minister Khanna announced ₹36,230 crores for the new 594-km Ganga Expressway between Meerut to Prayagraj.

During his budget speech, Khanna proposed establishing a second phase of the Green Energy corridor in underdeveloped Bundelkhand to extract and transfer energy from solar plants with an estimated cost of ₹1554 crores. “The target is to complete the scheme in the next 3 years,” he said.

The government has allocated ₹200 crores for an industrial corridor in Gorakhpur, the home turf of CM Yogi Adityanath. It will come up near Gorakhpur Link Expressway.

In another development push, Khanna proposed ₹21,159 crores for the construction of new roads and flyovers and another ₹6209 crores for the maintenance of existing ones.

The Yogi government has also allocated ₹1525 crores for roads in rural areas and ₹250 crores for widening roads leading to sugar mills in the state. Another ₹50 crores have been allocated for the widening of roads leading to industrial and logistics parks.

In a move which likely to attract more farmers towards BJP, the government has allocated ₹1500 crore to provide a 100 per cent exemption in power tariff to private tube wells as promised in the party’s 2022 election manifesto.

The Yogi government has presented ₹6.15 lakh crore budget for the last fiscal.

A fund of ₹2491 crores has been earmarked for setting up 14 new medical colleges.

For women, the BJP government has allocated ₹4032 crores to provide assistance to destitute widows. At present about 32.62 lakh women are being provided financial assistance in the state.

With a goal to empower rural women, a fund of ₹83 crores has been allocated for self-help groups.

Speaking to media persons after the budget, chief minister Yogi Adityanath called it an “inclusive budget aimed at making Uttar Pradesh the largest economy in India”.

He also said that the budget lays the foundation for making UP’s economy worth $1 trillion in the next five years.
