Yashashvi Jaiswal surpasses Virender Sehwag’s 16-year-old record for the most runs by an Indian opener in a calendar year.
NEW DELHI: In a historic moment for Indian cricket, opener Yashasvi Jaiswal achieved a new milestone on Day 5 of the fourth Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Jaiswal surpassed Virender Sehwag’s 16-year-old record for the most runs by an Indian opener in a calendar year, marking a significant achievement in his burgeoning career.
As of December 30, 2024, Jaiswal has accumulated 1,476 runs from 15 innings in the year, with an average exceeding 56. His tally includes three centuries and nine half-centuries, solidifying his position as one of India’s most reliable openers.
Sehwag’s previous record stood at 1,462 runs in 2008, but Jaiswal’s record-breaking performance has now etched his name in the history books.

Jaiswal’s achievement places him among the select few Indian openers who have crossed the 1,400-run mark in a calendar year.
He joins the likes of legendary cricketers such as Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 1,562 runs in 2010, and Sunil Gavaskar, who made 1,407 runs in 1979. This feat highlights Jaiswal’s growing stature in the Indian cricketing landscape.
In the ongoing Test match, Jaiswal’s performance has been one of the few bright spots for India. In the first innings, he contributed a valuable 82 runs off 118 balls, including 11 boundaries and a six, stabilizing the Indian innings after an early collapse.
Although he was run out, his efforts were instrumental in pushing India to a competitive total. In the second innings, Jaiswal remained unbeaten on 82 runs from 197 balls, showcasing his resilience and commitment to ensuring India’s survival in the game.
