NEW DELHI: During a key diplomatic exchange between French President Emmanuel Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ajay Banga, the President of the World Bank, couldn’t help but inject some humor into the high-level meeting. As Macron met Modi to review the progress of initiatives launched during Macron’s State visit to India earlier this year, Banga made a light-hearted remark that broke the ice.

Macron took to Twitter to share the occasion, saying, “It is always a pleasure to meet with Prime Minister @NarendraModi, as our partnership with India is both rich and multifaceted. We reviewed the progress on the initiatives launched during my State visit last January, as well as key international issues.” Macron’s tweet was accompanied by a photo of the two leaders deep in conversation, with Banga smiling in the background.

As the meeting progressed, Banga, who was also in attendance, jokingly remarked, “If I had a rupee for every time we talk about India’s progress, I’d be richer than some countries!” The remark was met with laughter from both Modi and Macron, who acknowledged the depth of the growing partnership between India and France.

Speaking later on the bilateral ties, Banga commented, “The partnership between India and France is a textbook example of how global collaboration can drive change. What Macron and Modi are achieving together is something that will positively impact generations.”

Macron and Modi’s meeting focused on several important aspects of their strategic partnership. They discussed ongoing projects that aim to further strengthen economic, defense, and energy collaborations between the two countries. Both leaders also delved into key international issues, with a particular emphasis on climate change, clean energy, and the evolving global economy.
