GANGTOK: Temi Tea garden is often called one of the most beautiful tea estates in the country. Located in Namchi district in Sikkim, this serene tea garden is a major attraction for all tourists visiting the serene Himalayan state.
The last King – Chogyal – of Sikkim established the tea estate at Temi over 376 hectares with an elevation between 4,800 and 6,400 feet to provide employment to refugees along the Silk Route, coming down from Sikkim. He converted 440 acres of land into a sprawling tea plantation.
The recent promotion of the tea estate by the state government as a tourist destination has rejuvenated the local economy with bustling homestays and hotels.
The annual Temi Autumn carnival also attracts a lot of tourists every year. The carnival witnessed cultural performances along with adventure sports like paragliding and zip lines.
Business-wise, this year the tea estate recorded a breaking price for Temi Tea’s First Flush of Rs 7,500/kg in the open bid sale of the current cropping season, 2022.
The state government-run Temi Tea Estate is currently harvesting its first flush tea leaves. The current spell of rain is useful for tea gardens in harvesting a good crop. Temi Tea management is hopeful of manufacturing a minimum of 90,000 kg made tea in the current season.
Temi Tea Estate has further manufactured 10 lots of Tea which were placed for open bid sale, the tea received tremendous response from tea traders.
One lot of first flush tea fetched Rs 7,500/Kg which is exported to Korea, the other lots of tea also fetched good prices of Rs 6000/Kg, Rs 5100/kg, and Rs 4500/kg.
The main reasons for the good price for the tea are attributed to tea leaf plucking; only a bud and two leaves are plucked for manufacturing tea, Golden Tippy appearance of made tea and Orange flowery liquor Tea which are in great demand among tea connoisseurs across the world.
“The manufacturing process and marketing team of Temi Tea Estate also committed to manufacturing finest quality of tea and finding a proper market for this premium tea,” said Ravi Kumar, MD of the Temi Tea estate.
