NEW DELHI: Indian government officials reportedly warned former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina about the potential risks of appointing General Waker-Uz-Zaman as Army Chief in June of the previous year. Despite these warnings, Hasina proceeded with the appointment, a decision many analysts believe played a role in her recent political downfall, according to media reports.

Amid growing youth protests, General Zaman took a firm stance by issuing an ultimatum to Hasina, demanding that she and her sister leave the country.

According to media sources, the Army’s prompt decision to release opposition leader Khaleda Zia of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) made a significant change in the political landscape. This move suggests that Islamist groups, including Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir, may be set to have a more substantial influence on the country’s politics in the future.

Who is General Waker-Uz-Zaman?
