NEW DELHI: Delhi is set for a major political shift as Rekha Gupta takes oath as the new Chief Minister today, replacing Atishi.
Alongside Gupta, six BJP leaders—Parvesh Verma, Kapil Mishra, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Ravindra Raj, Ashish Sood, and Pankaj Singh—will be sworn in as cabinet ministers.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) returns to power in the national capital after 27 years, following its victory over the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the recent Assembly elections.
The swearing-in ceremony will be held today at Ramlila Maidan.
Rekha Gupta’s name was officially announced after much speculation, as Parvesh Verma was initially considered a strong contender for the post. Verma, BJP’s prominent Jat leader in Delhi, secured a significant victory against Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi seat.
Gupta emerged victorious from the Shalimar Bagh constituency, defeating AAP’s Bandana Kumari and Congress’s Parveen Kumar Jain by a margin of 29,595 votes.
She will be Delhi’s fourth woman Chief Minister, following in the footsteps of Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi.
The BJP’s other cabinet members also secured crucial wins—Kapil Mishra from Karawal Nagar, Ashish Sood from Janakpuri, Pankaj Singh from Vikaspuri, Ravindra Raj from Bawana, and Manjinder Singh Sirsa from Rajouri Garden.
The saffron party’s return to power marks a historic moment, ending AAP’s decade-long rule.
The election results, declared on February 8, signaled a major political realignment in the capital, with the BJP securing a decisive mandate.
