NEW DELHI: WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature aimed at helping users identify fake images by leveraging Google’s reverse image search. This initiative is part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to tackle the spread of misinformation on its platform. The feature, which is currently being tested on WhatsApp Web and Android beta versions, allows users to verify the authenticity of images shared with them without needing to download the images.
The process is straightforward: users can select an image in their chat, tap on the “search on the web” option, and WhatsApp will upload the image to Google with the user’s permission. Google will then perform a reverse image search to determine if the image has been edited, manipulated, or taken out of context. This tool aims to provide users with a quick and easy way to verify the legitimacy of images, thereby reducing the spread of fake news and misleading information.

In addition to this feature, WhatsApp has also introduced an in-app document scanning feature for iOS users. This new functionality allows users to scan documents directly within the app, offering filters like colour, grayscale, and black & white, and an auto-shutter function for easier scanning. These updates are part of WhatsApp’s broader strategy to enhance user experience and security on its platform.
The introduction of the reverse image search feature is a significant step forward in the fight against misinformation.
