NEW DELHI: Union Law Minister Kiren Rijuju said that he received a letter from Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana after he sought his recommendation for the next CJI.
“I have received the letter from the CJI nominating the next possible successor to become the CJI. There is a process; we are following the process and in due course of time, we will carry out the necessary action. Formalities are being done and I hope everything will go smoothly because from our side we are particular about rules and conventions,” Rijuju pointed out.
On Friday, CJI Ramana recommended Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as his successor.
Lalit is a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. Before his elevation as a judge, he was a senior counsel at the Supreme Court. Justice Lalit is the sixth senior advocate ever to be directly elevated to the Supreme Court.
He has issued a number of groundbreaking judgments, including the one which made divorce through instant ‘triple talaq’ among Muslims illegal and unconstitutional.
