Well deserved: R Madhavan named best director at IIFA

The actor-director won the award for his poignant Rocketry: The Nambi Effect

NEW DELHI: The rocket is flying as actor-director R Madhavan’s take on the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) espionage case saw him win the best director award for ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ by the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA).

In announcing the news, IIFA shared a picture on social media. “The directorial brilliance of R Madhavan takes centre stage at IIFA 2023 as he wins the IIFA trophy in the category of direction for his masterpiece ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’.”

Released in 2022, ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ is a biographical drama film that revolves around the life of Nambi Narayanan, a scientist at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), portrayed by Madhavan himself. The film, which was written, produced and directed by Madhavan, captivated audiences with its compelling narrative.

Fans flooded the comments section with expressions of admiration and congratulations, using red hearts and fire emoticons to convey their excitement and appreciation for Madhavan’s achievement.

Many fans remarked that the award was well-deserved, recognising the talent and dedication showcased by the director.

‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ received an overwhelming response upon its release on June 1. The biographical drama was screened in Parliament on August 5, further solidifying its impact and significance. The film’s success can be attributed to its global appeal, as it was released in six languages worldwide, including Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada.

The production of ‘Rocketry’ spanned multiple countries, with shooting locations in India, France, Canada, Georgia, and Serbia. The film also features special cameo appearances by Shah Rukh Khan and Suriya, who willingly contributed their talent and support without charging any remuneration.

Madhavan expressed his gratitude, highlighting the generosity of these stars and their willingness to contribute to the film’s success.

“I am an outsider, and I have met several people in my career who have wholeheartedly helped me. Just on my request, Amit ji (Amitabh Bachchan) or Priyanka Chopra post a tweet (to show their support for the film). I am grateful for their love and respect,” Madhavan shared, emphasising the camaraderie and support he received from industry peers.
