Zombie virus resurrected after 50,000 years by scientists at French National Centre for Scientific Research.

The research, An update on eukaryotic viruses revived from ancient permafrost, published on November 10, discovered 13 previously unknown viruses.

Pandoravirus yedoma, a 48,500-year-old virus is one of them which causes the release of carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere, amplifying the greenhouse effect.

The virus was found in a sample of permafrost taken from 52 feet (16 m) below the bottom of a lake in Yukechi Alas in the Russian Republic of Yakutia.

The virus has been termed as Zombie virus for its ancient nature. Research said these viruses are still infectious in spite of being frozen into ice for the past millenia.

These viruses pose a threat to the future of the planet as climate change progresses and ice will melt and thaw it would lead to the release of more ancient viruses.
