Wasim Akram in his book reveals that he was asked to cheat for Sachin Tendulkar in 1998.99 Asian Test Championship game.

Pakistani cricketer Wasim Akram in his book, ‘Sultan: A Memoir’ revealed that during the 1998/99 Asian Test Championship between India and Pakistan there was a time when he was asked to cheat to save India’s star cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar.

Akram wrote that Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar had asked him to call Tendulkar back on the field after this run out but he refused.

“Sunil Gavaskar came to me during the break along with the match referee. He said that you should call Sachin to play again,” he has written.

“People will love you a lot in India. Sunil Gavaskar knew how excited the Kolkata crowd gets. I said that I have my fans too and I have to worry about them. This is not my decision,” he has written.

“The umpire has given Sachin out and it is too late to overturn the decision. We all know it was an accident but such things happen in cricket,” wrote the former star cricketer.

He narrated how the manner in which Tendulkar got out as he collided with Shoaib Akhtar in the second innings and it had become a matter of controversy.
