In the 1990s, Thomas Oaster, director of Missouri Centre for Men's Studies, used to invite groups from US, Australia dn Malta to hold small gatherings on IMD.

The day is celebrated also to explore and initiate conversation on stigma topics like men's health and suicides.

The theme for IMD is usually "Helping men and boys".
