Dr Kalam was known as the "Missile Man of India" for his contribution to India's first nuclear test in 1998.

 A deep knowledge of Hindu culture, with a favorite character in Mahabharat being Vidura, whom he admired for courageously fighting injustice in a peaceful manner.

Dr. Kalam never owned a television but cherished his veena, books, CD player, and laptop.

He donated his entire salary as Chief Scientific Adviser and later as President to a foundation he founded.

Besides being President, he was an accomplished writer with 18 books, 22 poems, and four songs to his name.

His famous quote "Winners are not those who never fail, but those who never quit" continues to inspire.
