NEW DELHI: A cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over the southeast Bay of Bengal today, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) stated.

The weather department has also issued a warning for the cyclone named ‘Mocha’.

“Under its influence, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the same region on May 7, which may develop into a depression by May 8,” IMD stated.

The system is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm and move nearly northward towards the central Bay of Bengal.

As it is still evolving, IMD is keeping a close watch on the system, and it will provide all the details of its path and intensification after the formation of the low-pressure area.

Following this development over the Bay of Bengal, light to moderate rainfall is expected at most places, with isolated heavy rainfall very likely over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 7.

“Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected during May 8-10. The sea condition is likely to be rough on May 7 and very rough from May 8 onwards over the Southeast Bay of Bengal,” IMD predicted.

The wind speed is also expected to increase, with squally weather reaching 40-50 kmph and gusting to 60 kmph over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Andaman Sea on May 7.

The wind speed would gradually increase, becoming 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Andaman Sea on May 8 and 9 and over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the north Andaman Sea from May 10 onwards, IMD said.

Moreover, the wind speed would gradually increase, becoming 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph over the Southeast and adjoining Central Bay of Bengal from May 10th onwards.

The weather department, after studying the expected rough sea conditions, advised fishermen, small ships, boats, and trawlers not to venture into the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas from May 7 onwards and into the adjoining Central Bay of Bengal from May 9 onwards.

Tourism, offshore activities and shipping over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are expected to be regulated during May 8-12.

Shipping activity over the sea areas of the southeast and central Bay of Bengal is expected to be regulated from May 8-12.

“Those who are currently over the Southeast Bay of Bengal are advised to return to safer places before May 7, and those over the Central Bay of Bengal are advised to return before May 9,” the weather department urged.

The IMD has urged people to remain alert and take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this time.
