NEW DELHI/KOLKATA: Former Trinamool Congress Dhugpuri MLA Mitali Roy, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday, two days before the by-poll in Dhugpuri in West Bengal.
Her joining was overseen by the BJP State President Sukanta Majumdar in Kolkata.
Roy’s truck with the BJP comes at a time when the Dhugpuri seat goes to the bypoll on September 5 where key Rajbangshi community — those who come from lower Assam — make a significant votebank — that had helped BJP last time. Last week, Mamata minister Anoop Biswas had tried to placate her
The former TMC leader had contested from Dhugpuri seat on twice, winning once in 2016 and losing out to saffron party’s Bishnu Pada Roy in 2021 legislative assembly elections.
Death of the BJP Dhupguri MLA has necessitated the bypolls in this seat that is in the tea garden haven of Jalpaiguri district.
The saffron party had already declared its choice of candidate in March, where they have chosen to field Tapasi Roy, the widow of CRPF jawan, Jagannath Roy, who was killed in a terrorist attack in Kashmir in March 2021.
On the other hand, the TMC will be fielding Nirmal Chandra Roy who is a teacher from Dhupguri Girls College.
Many political observers have slated the bypolls to be a defining moment in West Bengal, with the BJP seeking to maintain its State Assembly hotbed in North Bengal after its poor show in the Panchayat polls as it lost 22 per cent of its seats.
On the other hand, it will also be a litmus test for the opposition front INDIA’s alliance, as the Left-Congress state alliance prepares to make its inroads in the territory at a time when INDIA alliance saw participation of 26 parties where CPI & CPIM joined hands with Mamata Banerjee for talks.
If Congress-Left go onto contest against the TMC, it will test the unity of the alliance.
