NEW DELHI: In a significant move aimed at enhancing the integrity of electoral rolls, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has decided to link Voter ID cards with Aadhaar numbers. This decision was finalized during a high-level meeting held on March 18, 2025, involving Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, and officials from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The initiative seeks to eliminate duplicate and bogus voter registrations, ensuring a more transparent electoral process.
The meeting, which also included legislative and technical experts, emphasized that the linking process will adhere strictly to constitutional provisions, including Article 326 of the Constitution and the Representation of the People Act, 1950. The ECI clarified that the linkage will be voluntary, and no voter will be disenfranchised for choosing not to link their Aadhaar with their Voter ID.
The process is expected to roll out in phases, with technical consultations between UIDAI and ECI experts set to begin soon. While no fixed timeline has been announced, the ECI aims to address voter roll discrepancies by the end of 2025. The initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize electoral systems and ensure fair elections.
