NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vijender Gupta has been appointed as the Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly. This appointment comes on the heels of the BJPโs decisive victory in the recent Delhi Assembly elections, marking their return to power in the capital after 27 years.
Expressing his gratitude, Gupta stated, โI am very much thankful to the party for giving me this responsibility of Delhi Assemblyโs Speaker. I will discharge this responsibility effectively.โ
The newly formed cabinet has scheduled a three-day Assembly session on February 24, 25, and 27. The session will commence with the appointment of a pro-tem Speaker by the Lieutenant Governor, who will oversee the oath-taking ceremony of all 70 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). Subsequently, the elections for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker will be conducted.

One of the primary agendas for this session is the tabling and discussion of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report.
On September 25, 2024, the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi had directed officials to table the several pending reports from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) in the Delhi Assembly.
Vijender Gupta, representing the Rohini constituency, has had a dynamic tenure in the Delhi Assembly. Notably, during previous sessions, he was forcibly removed from the Assembly on multiple occasions while voicing opposition against the then Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. Reflecting on his journey, Gupta remarked, โWhat I can assure you of is that the voice of the Opposition will neither be suppressed nor stifled in the Delhi Assembly like it was all these years.โ

The BJPโs recent electoral success has been attributed to promises of enhancing public services and providing free healthcare and electricity, resonating with a broad spectrum of Delhiโs populace. This victory is particularly significant for Prime Minister Narendra Modiโs party, as it reestablishes their influence in the national capital after nearly three decades.
As the Delhi Assembly prepares for its upcoming session, all eyes will be on the new leadership and the legislative priorities set forth by the BJP government.
