NEW DELHI: Indian filmmaker Vasan Bala has deactivated his Twitter account days after facing trolling for defending the box office failure of his recent directorial release Jigra, staring Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina.

The movie has not performed up to expectations at the ticket window, but Vasan Bala said in a latest interview that box office collections are not a parameter of success for him.

Vasan Bala’s Twitter account, which was operational until the previous day, was removed on Sunday. Every response to his previous tweets appeared as an empty slot. ‘This post is from an account that no longer exists.’ was the only message displayed. His account’s landing page is now blank as well.

Twitter users conjectured that the removal likely occurred after the director faced backlash for standing up for Jigra. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Vasan defended the movie and posted it on X. But in the comments on that post, the director was called ‘arrogant’ for refusing to acknowledge the film’s failure.

Now that the filmmaker has removed his account, the situation has altered. Many are jumping to his defense, arguing that he shouldn’t be held solely responsible for the movie’s failure. One person said, “They promoted it as an Alia Bhatt aka Lady Bachchan movie but wanted him only to take the responsibility for its failure,” in response to screenshots of his “absent” profile being posted on Reddit.

Some questioned Karan Johar, claiming that the film’s stars, Vedang Raina and Alia Bhatt, as well as producer Karan, had been prominently featured during its promotion. However, Vasan was the only one doing interviews when the movie didn’t do well.

Jigra, a story that revolves around a sister trying to break her brother from a prison in a foreign land, received positive as well as mixed reviews upon its last weekend release.

However, its box office collection didn’t reach the desired expectations. With a reported budget of ₹80 crore, the movie has only been able to cross half of its expenditure; till date, it stands at ₹40 crore collection tally and is set on the path of falling short of breaking even.
