UTTARKASHI: During the course of the rescue operation, an official source told The New Indian that the pipework has been completed and the 41 trapped workers will be rescued shortly from Uttarkashi’s collapsed tunnel.

A major breakthrough is expected on the 17th day of the 41 workers being trapped inside the Silkyara Bend-Barkot tunnel, with the administration confirming that the trapped workers will be reached and fished out within “half an hour”.

The National Disaster Relief Force teams have now pulled up their socks to get into the tunnel to rescue the trapped workers. Alongside the NDRF, a medical team has also been assigned to go inside the tunnel to examine the trapped workers after they are rescued. Moreover, the NDRF is heading the operation alongside the State Disaster Relief Forces.

Presently, a 55.3-metre pipe has been inserted to connect them efficiently with the trapped workers. Medical teams, on the other hand, have reached the spot with 15 ambulances, of which, three of them have been parked inside the tunnel. Moreover, to reduce the time to treat the trapped workers, a makeshift room has also been created inside the tunnel since the temporary hospital, in Chinyalusaur, is 45 kilometres away from the collapsed tunnel.

The medical team reached the tunnel with multiple oxygen cylinders for the 41 workers. Family members have also entered the tunnel with luggage for their fathers, sons and brothers.

Amid shouts of Jai Shree Ram and Jai Mata Di outside the tunnel, the entirety of the rescue team is preparing to fish the trapped workers outside to get them to experience the open world once again. Arnold Dix, the international tunnelling expert, also performed prayers at the makeshift temple of Baba Bholenath, which was made right outside the collapsed tunnel.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Minister of State VK Singh are also present to provide support to the rescue teams.
