Presently, the rescue operation has reached its final course with the rescue team using the ‘rat hole’ mining technique, where after digging the pits, the rescuers drops down a ladder and a rope to fish the trapped ones out. The pipework had already been laid with the laying of a 55.3 metre long pipe being welded through which the workers would escape with ease.
Earlier, officials had told The New Indian that a major breakthrough was expected on Tuesday, the 17th day of the workers being trapped inside the tunnel.

The rescue operations have also entailed keeping a Chinook helicopter stationed at the site whenever necessary to airlift the 41 after they are rescued from the Silkyara tunnel. The mission is being conducted by ONGC, SJVNL, RVNL, NHIDCL and the THDCL, while being assigned specific responsibilities while working in collaboration with each other.
Most of the operation, however, is being led by the National Disaster Relief Forces alongside the State Disaster Relief Forces.
