UTTARKASHI: As the American Auger machine malfunctioned on the 14th day of the rescue operation at the Silkyara Bend-Barkot tunnel at Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, drilling has halted once again to rescue the 41 workers.

Arnold Dix, an international tunneling expert, told reporters that the auger machine was “finished” and of no use after getting stuck inside one of the structures during the drilling.”There are no other auger machines to work it through. We won’t be using another auger machine for the drilling. We will go back to basics and start drilling manually,” Dix said.

The operations are still underway with various government agencies working tirelessly according to their assigned tasks to ensure the safe evacuation of the 41 trapped workers, in accordance of the tasks assigned. Renowned experts, present on site, are also being consulted to get the trapped workers rescued without any harm done.

Presently, freshly cooked food is being provided to the workers at regular intervals including fresh fruits through operational pipes. These pipes are also being used to provide medicines and salts at regular intervals. They are also being communicated on a regular basis through wire connectivity developed by the State Development Relief Force, whereupon officials have been notified that the trapped few are safe and mentally stable.

On November 12, 2023, the under construction tunnel had collapsed becasue of a debris falling upon the tunnel on the Silkyara side. Upon the disaster happening, both the Uttarakhand government and the central government started their operation to rescue the trapped 41.

The rescue operations are being undertaken by ONGC, SJVNL, RVNL, NHIDCL and the THDCL, while being assigned specific responsibilities while working in collaboration with each other.
