NEW DELHI: The US Mission to India has announced an additional 250,000 visa appointments for Indian travellers, including tourists, skilled workers, and students. This initiative, revealed in a statement by the US Embassy in New Delhi, aims to address the growing demand for travel for tourists between the two countries, skilled workers and students which is key to bolstering people-to-people ties.

US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti emphasised, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden set an ambitious goal to improve and expedite the visa process, and I’m proud to say we’ve delivered on that promise.” He further noted that consular teams across India have worked tirelessly to meet the surging demand.

For the second consecutive year, the US Mission to India has processed over one million non-immigrant visa applications, reflecting the increasing desire for travel between India and the United States. The additional 250,000 visa slots will allow Indian applicants to secure timely interviews, further facilitating tourism, business, and education.

“More than 1.2 million Indians have travelled to the US so far in 2024, a 35% increase compared to the same period in 2023,” according to the statement. At least six million Indians already hold nonimmigrant visas, and the US Mission continues to issue thousands more daily.

The US Mission highlighted that during the summer 2024 student visa season, record numbers of applications were processed, ensuring that all first-time student applicants were able to secure appointments at one of the five consular sections in India. “We are now focused on bringing families together, connecting businesses, and facilitating tourism,” the embassy noted.

As the visa process continues to accelerate, the new slots will allow many more Indian travellers to visit the United States, with a particular focus on enhancing opportunities for skilled workers, students, and tourists.
