US lying about Ukraine dam explosion on Russian frontline?

Last year, Ukrainian troops launched US-supplied HIMARS on the dam

Several towns and villagers have submerged in southern Ukrainian region of Kherson after Tuesday's dam blast.

NEW DELHI: Even as Kyiv has been shelling crucial infrastructure and the US has blown up the Nord Stream pipelines, Washington insinuated on Wednesday that Russia may be involved in the destruction of a significant Ukrainian dam currently under Moscow’s control.

The Nova Kakhovka dam on the Dnieper River in the Russian-held city of Kherson was destroyed on Tuesday, two days after Ukrainian forces launched their much-anticipated counteroffensive, resulting in the submergence of the Ukrainian-held portion of Kherson. The dam has been under Russian control since the beginning of the war.

The explosion occurred on the same day that the Washington Post, based on a US intelligence leak, reported that it was Ukraine that had bombed the crucial Nord Stream pipelines, which carry natural gas from Russia to Germany, in September of last year. The report stated that the US was aware of the Ukrainian sabotage plan three months before the pipelines were blown up in the Baltic Sea.

A senior White House official stated that the Joe Biden administration was unable to definitively determine who was responsible for the dam’s destruction, although spokesman John Kirby mentioned that Washington was assessing reports suggesting Russia’s involvement.

Both Russia and Ukraine have blamed each other for the destruction of the dam. Moscow argued that Kyiv had sabotaged the dam to divert attention from their faltering counteroffensive. Russia has claimed that Ukraine has suffered significant losses, including nearly 4,000 military personnel, 52 tanks, 207 armored vehicles, 134 vehicles, 5 aircraft, and 2 helicopters, during the initial phase of its counteroffensive. Russian casualties have been reported at over 280, including 71 deaths.

Interestingly, the Washington Post reported last December that Ukraine had conducted a test strike on the dam using US-supplied M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) launchers, which have a range of 50 miles.

The report quoted Major General Andrii Kovalchuk of the Ukraine military’s operational command in the southern region, who stated that the troops fired HIMARS launchers at one of the floodgates of the dam, creating “three holes in the metal to see if the Dnieper’s water could be raised enough to hinder Russian crossings without flooding nearby villages.” Major General Kovalchuk described the test as a “success”.

Following the dam explosion on Tuesday, thousands of Ukrainians were forced to evacuate their towns and villages for safer locations. On the Russian side, authorities reported an approximately 36-foot rise in water levels.

Meanwhile, Tucker Carlson, a former Fox News journalist who was recently fired, suggested that Ukraine may have been responsible for the explosion of the Soviet-era dam.

As the explosion generated outrage in many parts of the world, several social media users expressed suspicion that the US, which has provided nearly $75 billion in support to Ukraine and pledged ongoing support until Russia is defeated, may be concealing facts about the blast at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam.
