NEW DELHI:  South Indian film-serial actress, writer and activist Gayathri Arun in a Kerela Goverment sponsored event, insulted Prime Minister Narendra Modi by labelling him a “pimp of the American government” at Nadapuram in Kozhikode district, Kerala, on Friday.

Arun, famous for starring as Deepthi IPS, in the Malayalam soap opera Parasparam, while addressing the media, said “I challenge if any of the media persons sitting here has the guts to write that Narendra Modi is a pimp who is acting as per the orders of American arms dealings.” This clip is part of a speech in which the actress made other objectionable comments the day before yesterday.

Earlier in the 2021 Kerala Assembly Elections, Modi had called the LDF party a twin of the United Democratic Front.  “UDF and LDF are twins. They are twins of misgovernance, corruption, political violence, communalism, casteism, cronyism, nepotism and more,” Modi had said during the second rally in the state.

The LDF, led by the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Communist Party of India (Marxist) government, constitutes a coalition of left wing political parties, having been in power in the state since 2016.

Recently, LDF had come under the scanner of multiple central agencies regarding the smuggling of gold as well as the reappointment of Dr Gopinath Raveendran as Kannur University Vice Chancellor.

A bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, and Justices JB Pardiwala, and Manoj Misra, had issued the order in response to an appeal against the 2022 Kerala High Court order approving the reappointment. Justice Pardiwala, delivering the verdict on behalf of the bench, stated, “We have taken the view that the Chancellor abdicated or surrendered the statutory power, rendering the entire decision-making process invalid.”

The extension of Raveendran’s term as Kannur University’s VC had become a prominent point of contention, deepening the rift between Kerala governor Arif Mohammed Khan and the LDF government.

The situation escalated into a political controversy when accusations surfaced, suggesting that the appointment of Priya Varghese, the wife of Kerala CM’s private secretary KK Ragesh, as an assistant professor at Kannur University, was a reciprocal arrangement for reappointment.
