NEW DELHI: Speaking to The New Indian, Dr. Vijay Vad, an Indian-American physician with over three decades of experience in the U.S. healthcare system, has candidly described the American healthcare landscape as both “the most expensive and the most exhausting” for patients. Dr. Vad, who has worked with elite athletes and everyday patients alike, emphasized the myriad challenges faced by those seeking medical care in the United States.
“The cost of healthcare here is staggering,” Dr. Vad stated during an interview for the show India Abroad. He noted that healthcare expenses in the U.S. can be nearly twenty times higher than those in India and ten times that of Germany. “For many, the financial burden alone can be overwhelming,” he added.

Dr Vad pointed out that while the U.S. boasts some of the most advanced medical technologies and institutions, this high level of care often comes at a steep price. “It’s a privilege to receive treatment in renowned facilities, but the associated costs can lead to a sense of exhaustion for patients,” he said. The constant worry about bills and insurance claims can overshadow the healing process, making recovery more stressful.
In discussing his experiences, Dr. Vad recounted the frustration many patients face navigating the complexities of health insurance. “Even simple procedures can become a logistical nightmare due to bureaucratic red tape. Many patients find themselves trapped in a system that prioritizes profit over care,” he explained.

Dr. Vad’s journey to the U.S. was inspired by his grandfather, who faced severe knee issues and a lack of accessible medical solutions in India. “This personal history motivated me to develop innovative, minimally invasive procedures that can offer real relief to patients, especially for common conditions like knee arthritis,” he noted. His creation, known as Carboplasty, utilizes patients’ stem cells and has shown remarkable results at a fraction of the cost typical in U.S. hospitals.
The doctor, who has treated athletes from the West Indies cricket team, believes that the U.S. healthcare model can learn from international systems that provide more equitable care. “It’s essential to balance quality with affordability,” he emphasized, urging a reevaluation of how healthcare is delivered in America.
Despite the challenges, Dr. Vad remains committed to making a difference. “While the system can be exhausting, I am dedicated to ensuring my patients have access to the best possible care without being crushed under the weight of medical expenses,” he concluded.
