NEW DELHI: Amid recent diplomatic tensions between India and the United States over pro-Khalistan activist Gurpatwant Singh Pannu case, US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti took a break from tense discussions by joining the Diwali celebrations at the US embassy in New Delhi. Garcetti’s upbeat dance performance to the Bollywood hit “Tauba Tauba” quickly gained attention online, bringing a light-hearted twist to a tense moment in Indo-US relations.

Wearing a brown kurta and stylish shades, Garcetti enthusiastically danced to “Tauba Tauba,” a song from the popular Bollywood film “Bad Newz,” starring Vicky Kaushal and Tripti Dimri. Shared widely on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), a video of his performance has since gone viral, amassing over 2.4 lakh views and more than 3,500 likes. The ambassador’s lively display of Bollywood-style moves appeared to resonate with audiences in both India and the US, serving as a cultural bridge amid the diplomatic friction.

While Garcetti’s Diwali dance provided a festive moment, it comes at a time when Indo-US relations are experiencing new challenges. Recently, tensions have flared over Pannu, a pro-Khalistan figure and leader of Sikhs for Justice, a separatist group banned in India.

This isn’t Garcetti’s first time on the Diwali dance floor. Last year, he made headlines by dancing to the Bollywood classic “Chaiyya Chaiyya,” a song from the 1998 film, Dil Se, featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Malaika Arora. His repeated participation in these celebrations demonstrates a commitment to engaging with Indian culture and connecting with local communities in a meaningful way.

In a post on X, Garcetti also expressed appreciation for the White House’s Diwali celebrations, describing the event as a “beautiful celebration of Diwali” and noting the significance of Indian Americans in deepening the US-India bond. He added, “As we celebrate the journey of light, we also honour the invaluable contributions of Indian Americans who deepen the #USIndia bond.”
