Four people travelling in a car got severely injured in an accident on Thursday night as a portion of the newly-constructed Purvanchal Expressway came apart in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur after heavy downpour. The injured were sent with their relatives after being discharged from hospital.

The 341-km-long Expressway, which connects Lucknow to Ghazipur in Eastern UP, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2021. The Purvanchal Expressway was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 22,500 crore

The Chief Executive Officer of Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) Arvind Kumar said, “There is no issue related to the construction of the road but the problem occurred as appropriate care could not be taken during the installation of advanced traffic management system (ATMS).”

After the accident, a huge crowd gathered on the road. The officials of the UPEIDA reached the spot, halted the traffic and diverted it to avoid any ruckus or snarl-ups.

Last year, the construction of this Expressway had triggered a slugfest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party (SP), which claimed the project began during its tenure.

The Expressway starts from Chandsarai village on the Lucknow-Sultanpur highway and passes through Barabanki, Amethi, Sultanpur, Faizabad, Ambedkar Nagar, Azamgarh, Mau before ending at Haldaria village in Ghazipur district.

The six-lane Expressway has eight fuel stations and four CNG stations. 4.50 lakh trees are slated to be planted along the Right of Way (ROW) across the Expressway. Rain Water Harvesting pits are also to be constructed in the ROW at every 500 m as mandated by geological conditions.

PM Modi and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath have often posited the Expressway as a microcosm of the state’s well-rounded development under the BJP dispensation.

“There was a time when the eastern region of UP had been taken over by ‘mafiawaad’ and poverty, but now the BJP government is writing a new chapter of development. The present government is paying equal attention to the eastern region as well as the western part of the state,” the PM had said while inaugurating the Expressway.

But this incident, just after few months of the construction of the Expressway, exposes a few chinks in the government’s armour. The CM must take stock of the matter and punish the negligent officials.
