The Yogi Adityanath government has announced a government job and an ex-gratia of ₹18 lakh for the family of the two minor Dalit sisters who were gang-raped and hanged to death in Lakhimpur Kheri earlier this week.

UP Police have arrested six accused on charges of raping and strangling the teenagers in Nighan area of the district on Saturday.

The accused have been identified Junaid, Suhail, Kmaruddin, Arif and Hafiz. Junaid was arrested for an encounter with the police. He sustained a bullet injury in his leg.

A person named Chhotu, the neighbour of the victim sisters, has also been arrested. He had allegedly introduced the rapists to the victims and helped them befriend them.

Speaking to media persons in their village, the victims’ brother demanded the death penalty for the perpetrators. “They should be hanged to death the way they hanged my sisters,” he said.

He also informed that the UP government has assured his family to provide a government job to a family member.

“The government has assured us to give as compensation ₹9 lakhs each for the two sisters. ₹10 lakhs will be given later,” the man informed.

The family was adamant for written assurance on the compensation and government job. They agreed to perform the last rites of the girls after local authorities assured them of all possible help.

A case has been registered under sections 302 (murder), 323 (assault), 452 (house trespass), 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and sections 3 & 4 of the POCSO Act at Nighasan police station.

As per the autopsy report, the duo died ‘due to asphyxia as a result of ante-mortem strangulation”.

A member of the Uttar Pradesh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights and two representatives of The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) will be visiting the victim family on September 19.

NCPCR chairman Priyank Kanoongo demanded that the hearing happens in a fast-track court and the death penalty is given to the accused.

Meanwhile, Opposition leaders have slammed the UP government over the gangrape and murder of the teenagers, alleging that the law and order situation is deteriorating in the state.
