UP Bypolls: Samajwadi Party secures Karhal seat

The main contenders were Tej Pratap Singh Yadav from the SP and Anuj Pratap Singh from the BJP, with five other candidates also in the fray.

NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party’s Tej Pratap Yadav has won the Karhal Assembly seat in the Uttar Pradesh bypolls, defeating BJP’s Anuj Yadav by a margin of 14,725 votes.

In this notable contest between uncle and nephew, Tej Pratap Yadav, the nephew, emerged victorious in a closely watched battle. This victory marks the fifth consecutive win for the Samajwadi Party in the Karhal constituency. The election was not just a clash between political parties but also a familial face-off.

The main contenders were Tej Pratap Singh Yadav from the SP and Anuj Pratap Singh from the BJP, with five other candidates also in the fray. The by-election in Karhal was a critical battle between the SP and BJP. Tej Pratap Yadav, nephew of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, represented the Samajwadi Party, while the BJP fielded Anujesh Pratap Singh.

Karhal Assembly Constituency is one of the 403 constituencies in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Located in the Mainpuri district, it is one of the five assembly segments under the Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency. The by-election for Karhal was held on November 13, 2024.

In the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party had won the seat with 148,197 votes. BJP’s S.P. Singh Baghel received 80,692 votes, while BSP candidate Kuldeep Narayan secured 15,701 votes.

Meanwhile, in the broader Uttar Pradesh bypolls, the BJP secured six out of nine seats. The Samajwadi Party (SP) managed to retain two, while the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) claimed the Meerapur seat, as per data from the Election Commission at 5 PM.

In Katehari, Dharmraj Nishad defeated Shobhawati Verma (SP) by a margin of over 34,000 votes. In Majhawan, Shuchismita Maurya edged out SP’s Jyoti Bind with a narrow margin of 4,900 votes. In Ghaziabad, Sanjeev Sharma secured a massive victory with a margin of nearly 70,000 votes against Singh Raj Jatav from SP.
