The Delhi high court on Monday granted interim bail to former BJP MLA, Kuldeep Singh Sengar, to attend his daughter’s wedding. Sengar is serving a life sentence for raping a minor girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao.

Sengar has asked for two months’ interim bail from Delhi High Court on December 19 to attend his daughter’s wedding. However, the Delhi High Court bench led by justice Mukta Gupta and justice Poonam a Bamba granted him interim bail of 15 days from January 27 to February 10.

Expelled BJP MLA was sentenced to life imprisonment by the trial court for raping a minor girl in Unnao in 2017. He is serving life imprisonment in Tihar Jail. Counsel for Sengar told the court that he is the father and that the priest set the ceremony dates. Being the only male family member, he has to make arrangements.

The High Court bench asked Sengar to report to the SHO concerned on a daily basis during his parole period and furnish two sureties of ₹ 1 lakh each.

The trial, which started on August 5, 2019, after it was transferred from Unnao to Delhi on the Supreme Court’s directions, was carried on a day-to-day basis.

The Supreme Court, taking cognisance of the rape survivor’s letter written to the then Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, had on August 1, 2019, transferred all five cases registered in connection with the Unnao rape incident from a Lucknow court to the court in Delhi with directions to hold a trial on a daily basis and complete it within 45 days.

In 2017, expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his close associates allegedly gang-raped a minor girl multiple times. Sengar was found guilty of raping the victim and murdering her father with the help of Makhi police officers in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district.
