Union Minister Piyush Goyal participated in the run for unity programme jointly organised by the Department of Food and Public Distribution and the Department of Consumer Affairs to commemorate the 147th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on October 31, 2022, as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas.
Goyal paid floral tributes to the portrait of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel before flagging off the ‘Run for Unity’ from the premises of Krishi Bhawan.
The Union Minister also administered the ‘Rashtriya Ekta Divas Pledge’ to the officials and staff of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.
The Run for Unity event is held every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of former Home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. This is also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day.
“Run for Unity has been a key pillar of activities connected to Ekta Diwas for the past few years. This year the programme envisages holding 75,000 runs across the country as a special tribute to India’s 75th anniversary of independence by conducting 100 runs per district across 750 districts of India,” according to a government statement.
The programme was attended by senior officers along with approximately 450 officers and officials from the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD), Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA) and their affiliated organisations like Food Corporation of India (FCI), Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
The Department of Food and Public Distribution had already placed several banners at various prominent locations in Krishi Bhawan and on the way to India Gate, where the ‘Run for Unity’ concluded.
Goyal also observed a minute’s silence as a mark of respect for the deceased in the tragic accident in Morbi.
Amit Shah has written to all states asking them to organise 75,000 unity runs – 100 in each of the country’s 750 districts.
As part of the celebrations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Kevadia in Gujarat to pay homage to Sardar Patel at the Statue of Unity, participate in the Ekta Diwas parade and later address civil service trainees of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration.
