NEW DELHI: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her Budget 2024 speech announced a substantial allocation of ₹1.52 lakh crore for the agriculture and allied sectors in the fiscal year 2024–25. Emphasizing sustainable practices and increased production, Sitharaman outlined initiatives aimed at transforming India’s agricultural landscape.
Underlining the government’s commitment to bolstering agricultural productivity and sustainability. Sitharaman announced several key initiatives aimed at transforming agricultural practices across the country.
One of the standout initiatives is the introduction of 109 new high-yielding and climate-resilient varieties of 32 field and horticulture crops. These varieties are intended to enhance crop resilience to climate change impacts and boost overall agricultural productivity.

In a bid to promote sustainable agriculture, Sitharaman outlined plans to initiate one crore farmers into natural farming over the next two years. This initiative will be supported by certification and branding efforts to encourage adoption and ensure adherence to sustainable practices. Additionally, the establishment of 10,000 need-based bio-input resource centres across the country aims to provide farmers with access to organic farming inputs and expertise.

Recognizing the importance of proximity to markets, the Finance Minister announced the development of large-scale clusters for vegetable production. These clusters will be strategically located near major consumption centres, aiming to streamline supply chains and ensure consistent availability of vegetables throughout the year.
Furthermore, Sitharaman highlighted the government’s commitment to digital transformation in agriculture through the implementation of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). Over the next three years, DPI will aim to provide comprehensive coverage of farmers and their lands, facilitating access to crucial information such as weather forecasts, market prices, and agricultural advisory services.

The budget also includes provisions to strengthen agricultural research and development, with a focus on developing innovative solutions and technologies to address challenges faced by farmers. Sitharaman emphasized the importance of enhancing agricultural resilience and productivity through scientific advancements.
