Surbhi Kumawat left a suicide note blaming her family for not loving her

The brother of a 30-year-old woman, who hanged herself to death on the intervening night of Saturday-Sunday, filed a complaint against his brother-in-law alleging harassment.

Surbhi Kumawat worked as a marketing manager at Punjab National Bank (PNB). She was married to Shahid (38) for six years. The couple also has a five-year-old daughter. They stayed in the Muhana Mandi area of Jaipur.

This incident puts the spotlight on divorce cases and happy marriages gone sour in cases of similar inter-faith relationships, recent being IAS officers Tina Dabhi and Athar Aamir Khan, actor Amir Khan and film producer, writer and director Kiran Rao, actors Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Arora and actor Hrithik Roshan and interior designer Sussanne Khan.

On the intervening night of Saturday-Sunday, after her husband and daughter went to sleep, Kumawat hanged herself from a ceiling fan to death.

A suicide note was recovered where she wrote that she was upset. “The world is troubled by me. I am leaving my husband and daughter, who hate me,” she wrote.

Gajanan, the victim’s brother, told The New Indian that no one was happy with the marriage.

“They had known each other for five years before marriage. We were not happy with the match as my sister was highly educated and the guy was unemployed,” he said.

“They got married in Arya Samaj without telling anyone in the family. A few years back, Surbhi cut her wrist because of the problems she was facing at home. We calmed her down and handled her,” Gajanan said.

“We knew things were not good between the two but never thought she could take such extreme steps. We have filed an FIR against the husband for harassing our sister and will get justice,” he added.

Speaking to The New Indian, SHO Lakhan Singh Khatana said, “Husband and wife had a troublesome marriage. There have been issues between the two, as we are now told. The brother of the woman had filed an FIR against the husband for harassing her. We are investigating the matter and will take appropriate action.”

On Saturday night, at 9 o’clock, the family went to a programme in the society. After having food, they came back to their flat at around 11 pm. After the husband and daughter slept, Surbhi got up, went to another room, and hanged herself. When Shahid woke up on Sunday morning, he saw her body hanging.
