DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand Bhartiya Janta Party unit has shared a list of 10 names, including two former state Chief Ministers, to the central leadership for the Rajya Sabha seat which will fall vacant in July this year.

Uttarakhand has a total of eight seats in both the houses of the Parliament of India – five seats in Lok Sabha and three seats in the Rajya Sabha. At present, the BJP has five Lok Sabha MPs and two RS MPs in Uttarakhand.

Anil Baluni and Naresh Bansal are RS MPs from the BJP while Pardeep Tamta, whose tenure will be completed on July 4, 2022, is from the Congress party.

Devendra Bhasin, the party’s state vice-president said, “The list of 10 names has been sent to the central leadership. Now the Parliamentary board will finalize the name of the candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections. The names are confidential and will not be disclosed at this juncture.”

However, sources in the party told The New Indian that the names which are in the panel include former Chief Ministers Trivendra Singh Rawat and Vijay Bahuguna. The list also includes former state general secretary Kuldeep Kumar, former state vice-president Jyoti Prasad Gairola, former state president of disciplinary committee Kedar Joshi and former head of the OBC wing Shyamveer Saini.

Sources further added that the list also includes the names of three women candidates – Swaraj Vidwan, a member of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, Kalpana Saini, chairperson of the backward commission of Uttarakhand and Asha Nautiyal, former BJP MLA from Kedarnath.

BJP has the majority in the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly with 47 out of 70 seats and it should face no hurdle in winning the RS seat.
