NEW DELHI: A day after the broad daylight murder of Kanhaiya Ram Telli in Rajasthan’s Udaipur, the Congress on Wednesday refuted the claims of not providing adequate security to him. The party also said that the state government will fully cooperate with the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Speaking to the media at the party headquarters here, Congress’ media and publicity department’s chairman Pawan Khera said, “Police convened a meeting of prominent figures of the society. And after the meeting, he gave in writing that there was no need for legal action.”

To another question about NIA taking over the probe and the Rajasthan government also forming an SIT to probe the incident, Khera said, “Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has clearly said that the state government will fully cooperate with the NIA in the case.”

He also said that Gehlot, on a number of occasions, has said that the Prime Minister and Union home minister must address the nation over the issues of rising tensions in the society and stop the spread of hatred in society. “He has asked them to appeal to people to maintain peace and tranquillity across the country,” the Congress leader added.

On Tuesday, Telli was killed at his shop in Udaipur by two Muslim youths, who filmed the entire incident on camera and later released it on social media. They also recorded their confession in another video and also threatened Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Both the accused were arrested from the Rajsamand area of the state on Tuesday evening. The Union ministry of home affairs has transferred the case to the NIA and a team from the agency has already reached the state to initiate the probe.
