NEW DELHI: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) launched two indigenously designed Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs), Amulya and Akshay, constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL). Secretary (Defence Production) Sanjeev Kumar presided over the launch ceremony in Goa on January 5, 2025. These vessels are the third and fourth in a series of eight FPVs being built by GSL.

Speaking at the event, Sanjeev Kumar commended the collaboration between GSL and ICG, highlighting the resilience and innovation of the shipyard. He noted that the vessels, featuring over 60% indigenous content, reflect Indiaโ€™s growing capability in defence manufacturing.

GSL CMD Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay emphasized the shipyardโ€™s growth, with gross revenue surpassing โ‚น2,000 crore. He also highlighted the shipyardโ€™s modernization efforts, including the use of a modern ship-lift system for the simultaneous launch of the two vesselsโ€”a first in GSLโ€™s history.

The FPVs, Adamya and Akshar, launched in October 2024, are part of a โ‚น473-crore contract signed in March 2022. Each vessel measures 52 meters in length, has a displacement of 320 tonnes, and is equipped with a controllable pitch propellerโ€”a first for Indian-built FPVs.

Designed to meet ICGโ€™s operational requirements, these vessels will play a critical role in fisheries protection, monitoring exclusive economic zones, and coastal patrol. They are also equipped for anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, and search-and-rescue missions.

This project significantly contributes to local economic growth by supporting MSMEs and other industries within the defence ecosystem. With their advanced capabilities, the FPVs Amulya and Akshay underscore Indiaโ€™s progress in achieving maritime self-reliance.
