Tensions were running high on Thursday in Bihar’s Chapra where two people have died of mob lynching over an electoral rivalry. Prohibitory orders have been imposed and the Internet suspended in Saran district.

On Saturday, February 5, three young men were brutally beaten up by a mob with iron rods and pipes after tying their hands in Mubarakpur village under Majhi police station jurisdiction.

While one victim died on the same day, another passed away at a hospital on Wednesday night. The third person, Alok Kumar (25), is struggling for life at a hospital in the capital Patna.

Five people have been arrested by local police.

“An FIR has been registered and five people arrested based on photos and videos circulating on social media. DM Rajesh Meena has issued an order for the suspension of the Internet,” said superintendent of police (SP) Dr Gaurav Mangla.

Internet services will remain suspended till the night of February 10, Friday.

On February 6, prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC were imposed in the area.

As tensions between rival factions escalated, an angry mob set ablaze a poultry farm owned by one of the accused, Vijay Yadav, in Sidhariya Tola of Mubarakpur panchayat on Sunday. It also set three houses on fire and vandalised some vehicles.

People also pelted stones at the police, injuring a woman and a male officer each.

Accused Vijay Yadav is said to have a close association with the ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

Three youths were allegedly beaten up for not voting for Vijay’s wife, who was a candidate in recently-concluded civic body elections in Bihar.

Yadav hatched a conspiracy to teach a lesson to the three youths. Along with his accomplices, Vijay attacked them on a farm with iron sticks, accusing them of firing at Vijay’s wife two days before.
