Netizens went into a frenzy as reports stating that Twitter boss Elon Musk locked out employees temporarily emerged on Friday, giving a rise to speculations that he may decide to shut down the microblogging platform.

In an announcement, Musk closed off the Twitter headquarters in the USA’s San Francisco for its employees. Their badge access was revoked and the office was shut off till Monday next week, said reports.

Twitter employees received the shocker in a message from the billionaire. “Effective immediately, we are temporarily closing our office buildings and all badge access will be suspended. Offices will reopen on Monday, November 21,” the message read.

The new development comes amid reports that employees were leaving the company after Musk told them to work “long hours at high intensity” or leave.

The message went on to say: “Please continue to comply with company policy by refraining from discussing confidential company information on social media, with the press or elsewhere.”

Earlier this week, Musk told Twitter staff that they had to commit to working long hours and would “need to be extremely hardcore” or leave the company, as reported by The Washington Post.

In an email to staff, the firm’s new owner said workers should agree to the pledge if they wanted to stay.

According to reports, a large number of Twitter employees resigned in protest against the new diktat. Roughly 75 per cent of the remaining 3,700 Twitter employees have not opted to stay after the “hardcore” email.

At the beginning of this month, Twitter had 7,400 employees. Barely halfway through the month, if 75 per cent of them do not comply with the new “hardcore” terms, the social media giant will shrink by almost 90 per cent.

Meanwhile, #GoodbyeTwitter, #RIPTwitter and #TwitterDown took the Internet by storm as users fear that Musk could close operations.

“Musk turned one of the biggest sites on the internet into a crater within a month,” a user tweeted, although the assumption seems far too stretched an argument.

On the contrary, Musk has claimed that user engagement on Twitter touched a record high after his takeover. “Usage of Twitter continues to rise. One thing is for sure: it isn’t boring! Hit all-time high of active users today” on Nov 11,” he had tweeted.

As users posted thousands of tweets expressing apprehensions over Twitter’s future, Musk tweeted again: “And … we just hit another all-time high in Twitter usage lol.”

In response to a user’s question on if Twitter was on the brink of shutting down since its offices were closing, Musk tweeted: “The best people are staying, so I’m not super worried”.
