NEW DELHI: The Trump campaign has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) against Vice President Kamala Harris, alleging that she cannot legally assume control of the funds raised by President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign.

The complaint, filed by the campaign’s general counsel David Warrington, accuses Harris of a “brazen money grab” and describes the situation as potentially “the largest campaign finance violation in American history.”

The issue arose after President Biden, an 81-year-old Democrat, ended his reelection bid and endorsed Harris, who subsequently assumed control of the campaign’s funds. The Biden-Harris campaign had approximately $95 million in the bank at the end of June.

The Trump campaign argues that transferring these funds to Harris’ campaign constitutes an excessive contribution from one presidential candidate to another, which they claim is prohibited under federal law.

The Harris campaign, however, maintains that her assumption of control over the funds is legal, as she was already part of the “Biden for President” committee as the vice-presidential candidate. They view the FEC complaint as a baseless legal effort to hinder Harris’ campaign.

The FEC has not commented on the matter, as they typically do not discuss unresolved enforcement issues. Harris’ campaign reported raising $100 million since Biden’s endorsement, surpassing Biden’s remaining campaign funds. The issue may not be resolved before the upcoming presidential election on November 5.
