NEW DELHI: A team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has gone to London to investigate Khalistan and the anti-India terror link in a flag removal incident that happened at the Indian High Commission in March.
The five-member team of NIA officials left for London on Monday.
Sources said that this is the first such visit since the NIA started the probe in connection with the violent protest by a group of people in London against India.
The Indian High Commission in London witnessed a violent protest when a large number of people, believed to be Khalistani supporters, gathered and pulled down the tricolour. They were protesting the action taken by agencies against Khalistani radical Amritpal Singh in Punjab.
Amritpal is known for making provocative speeches to incite Sikhs, blaming “the Indian state” for drug problems in Punjab and the community’s miseries. In February, he led hundreds of his supporters to storm the Ajnala police station in Amritsar and force police to release a man arrested in a kidnapping case. At least six Punjab Police personnel were injured during the siege. Later, Amritpal was arrested by the Punjab Police.
The Delhi Police special cell had initially registered a case of UAPA against the act in London, later, the case’s investigation was transferred to the NIA. The team at the NIA will be meeting with Scotland Yard and might share input related to the case.
Sources said the NIA has also made a list of Khalistani sympathisers who are based in London, and it might be shared with Scotland Yard.
