SHIMLA: The local administration in Himachal Pradesh capital Shimla has identified 70 traffic bottlenecks on the Cart Road along the Sanjauli-Boileauganj stretch in the city and work is underway to widen these to ensure smooth flow of traffic.

While widening of 55 of the bottlenecks had been completed, work was underway on the remaining, said an official. The road widening is being done under the Shimla Smart City Project and is being undertaken by the Public Works Department.

The official said work on the remaining 15 bottlenecks had been delayed due to various issues, including private land coming in between and hiccups in forest clearances.

However, all formalities had been cleared and work had been intensified on widening these too, he said, adding the target was to complete the work by June-end. Among the bottlenecks, work had been started to widen the road next to Ripon Hospital near the bus stand and at the Lift.

The road widening near the Lift and Congress office, which provides a crucial link between the Card Road and the Mall Road, will prove quite beneficial as a lot of locals and tourists stop their vehicles while using the Lift to reach the Mall Road. This stretch between Lift up to the bus stand witnesses long traffic jams on a daily basis.

The BJP-led state government is learnt to be looking to widen all the bottlenecks before May or June so that the party could reap benefits in the elections to Shimla Municipal Corporation and the state Assembly.
