Toll plaza guard killed over ₹50 theft; Brij Bhushan link alleged

In Gonda, Balvant Singh's father alleged he was beaten up for defending Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

ARRAH: A toll plaza worker, a native of UP’s Gonda, has been beaten to death by a group of bouncers from Haryana allegedly over the suspicion of stealing ₹50 in Bihar’s Arrah.

However, the victim’s family has alleged that Balvant Singh was falsely accused of theft and that he was subjected to inhumanely behaviour after he objected to the use of objectionable words for BJP MP and former Wrestler Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan, who has been accused of sexual harassment by seven women wrestlers from Haryana.

Singh worked as a supervisor at a newly-constructed Kulharia Toll Plaza managed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). He was taken to the rooftop of a nearby hotel where he was brutally assaulted.

After thrashing him, the assailants put him on a train bound for Gonda. When the train stopped at Mankapur railway station, he was found in an unconscious state and rushed to the district hospital where he breathed his last.

Speaking to media persons, his father said, “When some people at the toll plaza used offensive words for Brij Bhushan, these people from Haryana got upset and beat up my son which led to his death.”

The initial questioning by the Uttar Pradesh police revealed the names of Abhimanyu Sharma, Sunil Jakhar, Sumit, and Vikram Kaushik from Rohtak, Haryana, alongside Gyanendra Singh and Sagar Golu from Uttar Pradesh. Efforts to apprehend the suspects are underway.

Toll workers claim that Balvant Singh used to support Brij Bhushan Singh during political discussions, which allegedly caused resentment among the Haryanvi bouncers.

The Kulharia Toll Plaza has been marred by disputes and conflicts since its establishment, often stemming from the negligence and misbehavior of toll workers. Local individuals with a propensity for violence have been employed by the toll company. Recently, an official from the district transport association lodged a complaint about the toll plaza staff’s misconduct towards drivers.

Arrah SP Pramod Kumar has ordered the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) against the bouncer and other toll plaza employees involved.
