TNI @Parliament | Sushil Modi demands strong stand against same-sex marraige from govt

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sushi Kumar Modi has demanded that the Central government take a strong stand against demands of legalising same-sex marriages.

His speech on same-sex marriage on the floor of the house triggered several political reactions and was one of the highlights of the session today. Later, speaking exclusively to The New Indian, Modi said, “Some left-liberal activist people have gone to court; I request the government of India to take a strong stand against same-sex marriage. All laws from succession to divorce only include man and woman,” BJP leader Sushil Modi tells The New Indian.

Modi has raised his objection to legalise same-sex marriage in India in the Rajya Sabha during the Zero-hour discussion on Monday.

“In Indian culture, marriage is a pious bond and it means a biological man and woman coming together which is a centuries-old ritual and considered as a divine origin,” said BJP leader Sushil Modi.

Sushil Modi has objected to the Supreme Court’s directions which sought a response from government on pleas to allow solemnisation of same-sex marriage under the Special Marriage Act, 1954.

“Two Judge bench can not decide on such social matters which include family, children and upbringing of them. Such matters should be thoroughly debated and discussed in parliament and society,” said the BJP leader.

Earlier on November 25, a supreme court bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli agreed to hear on various petitions seeking legalisation of same-sex marriage.

The Bench has transferred various issues pending before High Courts. It issued separate notices to the Union of India and the Attorney General of India R Venkataramani and listed the case for hearing after four weeks.

Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Modi tells The New Indian that Section 377 of IPC has been decriminalized which allows same-sex relations. However, marriage is not a closed-door thing which is why the Indian government should not allow same-sex marriage.

Sushil Modi shared factual data from around the world saying that only 33 countries have legalised same-sex marriage. In Asia no country has enacted a same-sex law except Taiwan, Japan even after being a part of G-7 countries has not enacted it.

Rajya Sabha MP further said that some left-liberal activist people have gone to court seeking the legalisation of same-sex marriage. Such people want India to follow western countries’ decisions.
