Tis Hazari Court orders police custody for Jyoti Prakash in Paschim Vihar shooting case

NEW DELHI: Delhi’s Tis Hazari Court on Thursday granted a two-day police custody for Jyoti Prakash, also known as Jyoti alias Baba, in connection with the November 6 shooting outside Raj Mandir Hyper Market in Meera Bagh, Paschim Vihar West. The incident is allegedly linked to an extortion attempt.

Assailants fired multiple rounds at the market, reportedly as part of an extortion scheme. Police indicated that around ten rounds were discharged following an extortion demand made through WhatsApp chats, which have been reviewed as evidence.

Advocates Deepak Sharma, Virender Mual, and Rohit Kumar Dalal, representing Prakash, opposed the police custody, arguing that Prakash could be effectively interrogated under judicial custody due to threats to his life. Advocate Sharma raised concerns over his client’s safety and claimed a threat to his safety, prompting the court to direct the Station House Officer (SHO) to provide sufficient security for Prakash while in police custody.

Jyoti Prakash is the elder brother of notorious gangster Kapil Sangwan, alias Nandu, who is believed to be operating from the United States. Authorities claim that Nandu had previously issued threats to the market owner, attempting to extract protection money. The court noted that this incident underscores the alleged coordinated operations between the brothers—one directing activities from abroad while the other exerts influence locally.

Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Ankit Karan Singh highlighted the need for police custody to uncover further details of the conspiracy, stressing the coordinated roles between Prakash and his brother, Nandu. The investigating officer (IO) presented the WhatsApp exchanges as crucial evidence, suggesting that the firing incident was executed under Prakash’s direction as part of the extortion plot.
