TENNESSEE, USA: With the U.S. presidential election just a day away, Executive Director Rohan Dua of The New Indian stopped in Tennessee to gauge local sentiment. Among a group of elderly women, support for Kamala Harris, current Vice President and Democratic candidate, was strong.

When asked who had the better chance in the election, Mary, one of the women, enthusiastically endorsed Harris, calling out loud “Kamala” exclaiming, “Absolutely, she’s going forward, not back.”

She believes Harris represents progress and resilience, traits that resonate with her and many others in Tennessee.

Mary agreed that Harris supporters are known to be bold but acknowledged that Donald Trump’s supporters show similar determination. Another woman added, “I hope to goodness it’s Kamala.”

She expressed confidence that Harris is better suited for the presidency, pointing to Trump’s failed bid for re-election four years ago and asserting that “he still isn’t good enough.”

When the conversation shifted to claims of misconduct against Biden, such as accusations of paedophilia and mismanagement of the economy, the women dismissed them outright.

“Absolutely not, look at the statistics”, stating that Biden had, in her view, improved the nation’s economic situation.

Finally, when asked about Biden’s controversial remark characterising some Trump supporters in a negative light, where he said Donald Trump’s supporters are garbage, meaning it goes on to drive a garbage van.

The woman seemed unfazed, expressing little sympathy for the criticism Trump himself has received instead she remarked “he fit in the garbage himself”.

The mood reflected a deep division in Tennessee as voters headed to the polls, with each side as determined as ever to see their preferred candidate in office.
