JAMMU: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is visiting Jammu and Kashmir days after terrorists carried out an ambush on two army vehicles that left four army jawans dead. He said that all the necessary steps would be taken to prevent such incidents in the future as every Army jawan is important for the Central Government.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said “I pray for the speedy recovery of the Army jawans who sustained injuries. I would like to assure you that keeping in mind the sensitivity of the incident, necessary required steps are being taken. Each and every army jawan is important to us.”

Three civilians were found dead during the anti-terrorist operation in the area on December 22, following allegations that they were picked up by the Army for questioning in the aftermath of the terrorist ambush.

Defence Minister said that besides winning the war against terrorists and defending the country, troops have big responsibility of winning the hearts of fellow countrymen.

“We will win the wars and we will eradicate terrorism as well. But we will have to make sure to win the hearts of the people. You all have a huge responsibility on your shoulders, and for that, we will always be grateful to you,” he told Army jawans.

He said that there should be no lapse which hurts a countryman. “Be connected with people, win their trust. I believe you are fulfilling that responsibility very well, but you need to do so more seriously and cautiously. From time to time you need to visit the people and enquire about their wellbeing in order to know that if they are facing any difficulty,”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday, reached here on a day-long tour of Jammu and Kashmir to review the security situation in the wake of a recent terrorist ambush the border district of Poonch.

Rajnath Singh, accompanied by Army Chief General Manoj Pande, was received by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Northern Command, Lt. Gen. Upendra Dwivedi at the Jammu technical airport, the officials said.

Soon after his arrival, the Defence Minister left for Rajouri-Poonch sector where he is scheduled to review the security situation and the counter-terrorist operation which is going on in the region following the December 21 ambush at Dhatyar Morh between Dhera Ki Gali and Buffliaz in Poonch.

Official sources said the Defence Minister is likely to meet the families of the deceased civilians during his visit to Rajouri. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is also going to review the security situation at a high-level meeting at the Raj Bhawan Jammu.
