Controversial film, ‘The Kashmir Files’ won Best Film at the Dadasaheb Phalke International Awards 2023. Director Vivek Agnihotri has been in the limelight for this film and has been accused for spreading a biassed narrative of the Kashmir conflict. He has been defending ‘The Kashmir Files’ as it deals with a difficult topic, tensions and complexities of the “Kashmir conflict”, as well as the broader debates around how the conflict is represented and understood in India. The film has grossed Rs 340.92 crore worldwide.

The film deals with the history of the Kashmir conflict, focusing on events that took place in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Kashmir Valley, and alleged human rights violations by security forces in the region.

Last year, during the International Film Festival of India 2022, ‘The Kashmir Files’, was back in the news. Israeli director and jury chairperson of IFFI, Nadav Lapid called the film “vulgar and propaganda” and it sparked a furious debate. This was followed by various diplomats taking part in the debate. Lapid later apologised for his remarks as he was accused of being insensitive towards the suffering of Kashmiri Pandits.

On Sunday veteran actor Prakaj Raj called the film a “nonsense film” to which Agnihotri retorted saying, “A small, people’s film The Kashmir Files has given sleepless nights to Urban Naxals so much that one of their Pidi is troubled even after one year.”

After receiving the award, Agnihotri tweeted, “This award is dedicated to all the victims of terrorism and to all the people of India for your blessings.”

Lead actor Anupam Kher who was awarded most versatile actor at the Dadasaheb Phalke International Awards 2023, said, “Thank you Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival for honouring me with the most versatile actor of the year award for The Kashmir Files, Kartikeya 2 & Uunchai. I dedicate this award to my audiences! Will continue to dream & work hard. Proud that TheKashmirFiles got the Best Film Award.
