NEW DELHI: In a rare turnaround during the last 15 years, BJP’s stronghold in Datia constituency on Sunday bucked the saffron wave in the Hindi heartland where Congress candidate Bharti Rajendra registered a win, dealing a severe blow to the three-term consecutive winner and Madhya Pradesh’s incumbent home minister Narottam Mishra.

Mishra, a prominent BJP MLA, had been a formidable force in Datia, winning the seat in successive elections in 2008, 2013, and 2018. However, the 2023 Madhya Pradesh Assembly Elections saw a remarkable reversal, with Congress emerging triumphant.

Bharti Rajendra secured victory by a margin of 7,742 votes.

Datia, a traditionally contested seat, witnessed a fierce battle between the two leaders. In 2018, Mishra secured the seat with 49% of the votes, defeating Bharti Rajendra for the third consecutive time. Yet, this year’s electoral landscape proved different, with Bharti Rajendra securing victory by a margin of 7,742 votes.
