The 'Agniveer' scheme introduced in 2022 sparked a debate during the July 1 Parliament session. Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, claimed that Agniveers do not receive a pension or the title of 'Martyr'.
"Seven months ago, on December 8, this House was transformed into Kurusabha, presided over by a blind Dhritrashtra, where Dushshashan darbaris made every attempt to disrobe Draupadi. The ethics committee, that voted to recommend my expulsion on November 9, they voted 6-4, had 10 members and one chairperson. Of the five Loksabha members from the BJP, four have not returned to the House, and the Chairperson, a BJP member has also not returned to the House... Much like Lord Krishna protected Draupadi, the people of Krishnanagar have protected me... I gained freedom from fear. I will see the end of you."
Speaking on behalf of the entire Opposition and the 'INDIA' alliance, Gandhi said he hoped the Opposition would be allowed to raise the voice of people in the House. “This House represents the voice of India’s people and you, Speaker Sir, are the final arbiter of that voice. Of course, the government has political power, but the Opposition also represents the voice of India’s people and this time, the Opposition represents significantly more voice of the Indian people than it did last time,” he said.
