Das had applied for Indian citizenship in April after the CAA rules were notified over four years after the law's passage in 2019.

The Ministry of Home Affairs issued citizenship certificates to 14 individuals under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). This marks the first set of certificates handed out since the BJP-led Central government notified the CAA rules in March this year.

Regarding the US State Department's statement, the MEA characterized it as misplaced, misinformed, and unwarranted. India's constitution guarantees freedom of religion to all its citizens, and there are no grounds for concern regarding the treatment of minorities.

"The implementation of CAA will make the country unsafe, and create a law-and-order situation," Kejriwal asserted. He also condemned the allocation of taxpayers' funds to minorities from other nations, deeming it unacceptable.

Kaneez Fatima, a 48-year-old resident of Shaheen Bagh, dissed CAA, saying this would further compound population problem in a country that has already seen a surge during the last decade, touching the 140.76 crore mark last year.

The CAA, coupled with the government's plan for a National Register of Citizens (NRC), had sparked nationwide protests over concerns about exclusion of Muslims.
